‘On the Threshold II: Formal Presence’ exhibition aims to present the meaning of our existence in a post-internet society and experience of dif- ferent cultures through mainly painting and photography and the use of col- our. The works are drawn from a group of Japanese artists who are either studying at or graduated from universities in London, namely Goldsmiths College, University of London, Slade School of Art, UCL, Chelsea College of Arts and Central St. Martins University of Arts London. Their experienc- es of living in London are transnational and in some ways disjunctive. Their aesthetics wander between West and East, dissolving or denying it totally.

近藤の作品はしばしば、現実にはあり得ない人工的な(コンポジション)風景を描いている。彼によって再構成される世界は「一見するとわれわれと同じような世界を見ているが、微かに、しかし明らかに観察可能な現実を超越している」。彼の作品は、現在のコンピューター社会おけるデジタル再生産や拡張が日常的になった世界において、真実を見極めるのに必要とされる、現代的な葛藤や摩擦を示し出しているのではないか。彼は、時に崇高なるものを世俗的なものに対置させることによって、また、現実に微かに変更を加え、巧みに処理することによって、奇妙な近代性を想起させるような風景画を構築している。結果として、彼の絵画は、「自然と人工、具象と抽象、あるいは広い意味における伝統と完全な現代性の間に隠された秘境」に存在していると感じられる。
近藤は絵画におけるテーマ（主題）は、あらゆる形而上学的な筋書きや思想から自由でありたいと考えている。主題は都会での生活の中で、テレビを見ること、本を読むこと、音楽を聴くこと、あるいは友人と話すことといった日常的な出来事や現象から生まれる、意識と無意識の重なり合う層から形成されていると言えるであろう。こうした抽象的で内的思考を繰り返しながら、彼は表現のカギとなるイメージを写真や映画等の現代メディアから見つけ出すことが多い 。それらはしばし野晒で孤独な山々や脆弱な生き物のイメージであるが、いつも彼自身の幼年期の経験や関心などの記憶と深く結びついている。 彼はそのイメージを元にドローイングを繰り返し、自己により強い印象を与えるひとつの現実として再認されたときに初めて絵画の主題とする。しかしこれも日々の実践、カンヴァスに描きつけるという作業において初めて結晶化されるものである。
